When bad weather strikes or your schedule is overwhelmingly busy, taking your dog on a 2-hour hike isn't always possible. But for high-energy breeds, pent-up mental and physical energy often spells chewed-up furniture, incessant whining, or indoor pacing.

The secret weapon against destructive cabin fever is mental exhaustion. Fifteen minutes of intense cognitive problem-solving can tire out a dog faster than an hour of mindless running.

1. The Muffin Tin Scent Game

Take a standard kitchen muffin tin and several tennis balls. Place a high-value treat in just one or two of the muffin cups, then cover all the cups with tennis balls. Let your dog sniff out and nudge away the balls to find their prize. This engages their powerful olfactory senses.

2. The Shell Game with Cups

Use three opaque plastic cups. Show your dog a treat, place it under one cup while they watch, and slowly mix the cups around. Encourage them to point at or touch the correct cup with their nose to win the treat.

3. Teach the Names of Their Toys

Instead of playing random fetch, hold up a specific toy (e.g., "Rope"), have them touch it, and reward them. Gradually introduce a second toy. Soon, you can ask them to find specific toys by name, providing immense mental exertion.
